I was on a random stroll around the city enduring the scorching heat of summertime when someone handed me promotional coupons of a fastfood chain. It was colorful, mostly bright red; definitely visually stimulating to my digestive system. As my stomach began to respond to these simple yet effective visual stimuli, I began to wonder. How did the human civilization come to effectively spread information on a large scale in a short period of time like this promotion?
In 1450 Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable type printing press which started the Printing Revolution. This invention paved the way for the mass production of books, a large increase in printing across Europe. Circulation of information became unrestricted and it captured the masses across the borders.
Before the invention of the printing press, writings were reproduced manually and it wasn’t done just by anyone. It was a task reserved for scribes who did it in a special room called a scriptorium. After the scribe outlined the page layouts and copied the text, illustrations will be added to it by an illuminator. Imagine how labor intensive and expensive it was. No wonder the books were usually owned by monasteries, schools and rich people only during the Dark Ages and Middle Ages.
If it weren’t for the printing press, information dissemination would be costly and we wouldn’t have enjoyed a luxury of printed reading materials like books, magazines, newspapers, posters, flyers, pamphlets and many more.
On the day I had my tour around Life Star, I also had the chance to witness the operations inside a modern printing press, Lifeworks Print Hub, because both establishments were just adjacent to each other and were owned by the same family.
